NOVEMBER 3, 2026, CAPITAL BOND FOR SCHOOLS
A proposed $400 million school construction bond will appear on the Nov. 3 ballot and includes projects at every school in Mukilteo School District.
At Explorer Middle School, the proposed bond would fund the completion of the school replacement, including modern safety and security features, updated technologyinfrastructure, and new building systems.
EXPLORER MIDDLE SCHOOL
Explorer Middle School was built in 1972 as a K-8 school and became a middle school in 1993.
2026 CAPITAL BOND FOR SCHOOLS
The volunteer Capital Bond Advisory Committee (CBAC) evaluates and prioritizes facility needs across the district to help ensure bond funding is focused on the highest-priority projects. For the 2026 bond, the committee recommended $400 million in projects from approximately $975 million in identified needs.
In 2020, the Capital Bond Advisory Committee recommended a two-phased replacement of the school due to failing critical systems and the need for improved functionality. The first phase included new gyms, locker rooms, athletic fields, a weight room, and more. The proposed 2026 Capital Bond would complete the replacement of the remaining school buildings and connect the new learning spaces to the existing gymnasium facility.
The proposed 2026 bond includes the following improvements at Explorer Middle School:
Complete school replacement – Complete Phase 2 of the replacement plan, including construction of new classrooms, library, kitchen and commons, multi-sport court, perimeter fencing, and other building and site improvements.
Modern building systems – New buildings will include updated HVAC and plumbing systems, fire and life-safety systems, energy-efficient lighting and windows, and other infrastructure designed to improve comfort, reliability, and energy efficiency.
Safety, security, and technology – New learning spaces will include modern building access controls, including exterior door monitoring, along with updated network and technology infrastructure to support teaching, protect student and district data, and maintain essential operations.
