Severe Allergies, Asthma, Seizure and Diabetes

Contact your School Nurse if your student has any of the following health concerns

Note:  if your student requires a special diet at school, refer to the Special Dietary Needs within the Nutrition Department site.

Severe Allergies

Per RCW 28A.210.320, students diagnosed with severe allergies (prescribed an EpiPen/Epinephrine/AuviQ) are required to have the following items in place before they are allowed to attend school:

  1. Health Plan created by the School Nurse
  2. Current medication orders (H144b), signed by Healthcare Provider and Parent/Guardian
  3. Unexpired, properly labelled medications ( Epinephrine/AuviQ, Benadryl/Diphenhydramine, inhaler)

Seizure Disorder

Per RCW 28A.210.320, students diagnosed with a seizure disorder are required to have the following items in place before they are allowed to attend school:

  1. Health Plan created by the School Nurse
  2. Current Care Plan from their Neurologist, signed by Parent/Guardian
  3. Unexpired, properly labelled medications (Nasal Midazolam, Rectal Diastat, etc.) 

Diabetes

Per RCW 28A.210.320, Students with Type 1 or Type 2 Diabetes are required to have the following items in place before they are allowed to attend school:

  1. Health Plan created by the School Nurse
  2. Current Care Plan from their Endocrinologist, signed by Parent/Guardian
  3. Unexpired, properly labelled medications (insulin/Glucagon/Baqsimi)
  4. Supplies for low blood sugar, insulin administration, glucometer, ketone strips 

Even if your student is proficient in their own care, these items are still required by law to attend school. Please work with your nurse to determine whether supplies need to be carried by the student or kept in the office.

Asthma

All students who have an inhaler at school must have

  • Current medication orders (H144a), signed by a Health Care Provider and Parent/Guardian
  • Unexpired, properly labelled inhaler

Depending on the severity of your student's asthma, and their ability to manage symptoms, the School Nurse may create a Health Plan for your student. This plan outlines what action staff must take to support your student’s asthma management. In some cases, this health plan and related medications must be in place before your student can attend.
