Students may choose to enroll in English Language Arts Honors courses starting at grade 6. Students can enroll in an Honors class at any middle school grade level. If spaces are limited, LEAP students will take precedence. Parents of students in grade 5 wanting placement in English Language Arts Honors should indicate interest to the middle school in the spring.
Math placement process:
The purpose of a math placement request is to provide course level work where learners are challenged, but not overly stressed. There are two math course options for incoming grade 6 students, with the exception of Summit students who are automatically enrolled in the Summit math program for grade 6.
Option 1: Grade 6 Math
Most students are appropriately challenged by standard math courses and are prepared for Honors and Advanced Placement math courses in high school. If a student would benefit from a regularly-paced math class that focuses on grade 6 math concepts only, the student should request Grade 6 Math during registration.
Option 2: Grade 6 Advanced Math (Honors)
For students who are interested in the advanced math pathway, these courses cover four years of math standards in three school years. The Grade 6 Advanced Math course covers all grade 6 math concepts and half of the grade 7 math concepts, which means the course is faster paced. Students who are successful in the advanced math pathway complete Algebra 1 in grade 8.
Below are some abilities and achievements that support success in the advanced math classes:
- Typically solve accurately and efficiently
- Understand math concepts beyond memorization and procedures
- Apply math concepts through problem solving, explanation, and justifying how a problem is solved
- Typically score 80 percent or higher on math assessments throughout school career
- Earn a Level 3 or 4 on most recent Math Smarter Balanced Assessment (SBA)
- Earn above grade level equivalencies on Star or i-Ready math assessments
- Ability to work independently and collaborate on a team
- Demonstrate responsibility for completing assigned work in a timely manner
- Willingness to actively participate in class and take on challenges when working on difficult problems
- Self-advocate when clarity or support are needed
Students do not need to meet all the abilities and achievements listed above to request an advanced math placement. If a student would benefit from a faster-paced course that covers both grade 6 and part of grade 7 math concepts, the students should request Grade 6 Advanced Math within Qmlativ during registration.
By requesting Grade 6 Advanced Math, students are making a commitment for the full schoolyear Placement in Grade 6 Advanced Math is not guaranteed with the exception of students receiving LEAP math services. Final placement decisions are based on the number of classes available. If spaces are limited, LEAP students will take precedence. Parents of students in grade 5 wanting placement in Math Honors should indicate interest to the middle school in the spring.
