Horizon Elementary’s Spanish-English Dual Language Program nurtures confident, capable bilingual learners. Students build strong skills in both languages through engaging, high-quality instruction, developing fluency and literacy in English and Spanish.

Get ready – our Dual Language Program is growing! 

The Mukilteo School District’s Dual Language Program is expanding in Fall 2026, creating even more opportunities for students to learn, grow, and thrive in both Spanish and English. This dynamic bilingual program builds strong academic skills while helping students develop confidence, connection, and cultural awareness. 

Our program follows a 90:10 model starting in kindergarten, where most of the day is taught in Spanish with a gradual increase in English each year. By 4th grade, students are learning equally in both languages, setting them up for long-term success in a global world.

Through this program, students don’t just learn a second language, they become bilingual, biliterate, and culturally confident learners who are prepared to succeed in any setting. These outcomes are at the heart of dual language education and open doors to a bright future

The program will grow one grade level every school year. 

Deciding if the Dual Language Program is Right for Your Family

Mukilteo School District’s Dual Language Program requires a commitment from the entire family. Students learn both English and Spanish during the day, while parents are encouraged to support their child’s acquisition of both languages at home. 

The program is a good fit for students and families who:

  • Value other cultures
  • Have an interest in learning languages
  • Have a willingness to practice the languages at home
  • Are willing to participate in school projects and activities
  • Are willing to make a K-12 commitment to dual language

El Programa de Idioma Doble del Distrito Escolar de Mukilteo continuara en el otoño del 2026. Este es un programa bilingüe Español- Ingles donde los estudiantes desarrollen destrezas académicas y sociales en ambos idiomas . El programa de idioma doble promueve la diversidad cultural y el respeto entre todos los estudiantes. 

El programa sigue el modelo 90:10 model donde en kindergarten, 90% del día es en Espanol y el 10% en Ingles. A medida que los estudiantes progresan a traves de los diferentes grados, el Espanol disminuye el 10% y el Ingles aumenta el 10%, hasta alcanzar 50% Espanol y 50% Ingles en el 4 grado. 

Las metas del programa son para que los estudiantes se conviertan culturalmente competentes en las dos culturas, bilingüe, bi- literato y así lograr proficiencia en todas las asignaturas en ambos idiomas. A estos les llamamos los tres pilares de la educación doble.

Decidiendo si el Programa de Idioma Doble es Adecuado Para su Familia

El Programa doble del Distrito Escolar de Mukilteo requiere un compromiso de la familia completa.. Los estudiantes aprenden ambos idiomas el Español e Ingles durante el día  mientras se incentiva a los padres de familia  para que apoyen la adquisición de ambos idiomas. 

El Programa es idóneo para los estudiantes y familias que:

  • Valoran a otras culturas.
  • Tienen un interés en aprender idiomas.
  • Tienen iniciativa para practicar el idioma en casa.
  • Estan dispuestos a participar en proyecto y actividades escolares.
  • Estan dispuestos a realizar un compromiso de K-12 con el doble idioma.
